I was walking along the path in Sipala and heard a familiar voice. It was Shahara, the dragon whom I have known for years. She used to provide the muscle power to keep the Fairechylde sailing through the Fantasy Faire skies and was quite the party animal for many years, but like myself, she's matured. She had hatchlings last year and is quite busy keeping four young dragonlings fed and out of trouble.
And therein lay the problem. Someone had found a dragon egg and left it near Shahara's pond, assuming it belonged to her. With her four youngsters to care for, she really didn't have time to dedicate to hatching an egg. She asked if I'd be willing to help.
Well, I don't know much about dragonlings, but I've been working with children for 150 odd years and I figured it couldn't be much different. A young one needs warmth, attention, food once it hatches and someone to love it. I could do that, at least until we found the mother dragon, so Shahara left the egg in my care.
I stayed close to Shahara's pond, turning the egg frequently and telling it stories. At night I curled around it to keep it warm and grew quite attached to it.
When the egg cracked open the most wonderful little hatchling crawled out. He started peeping loudly and a few moments later a very worried mother dragon appeared. She had been hunting everywhere for her egg but hadn't smelled it because of its proximity to Shahara's nest. I explained to her what had happened, and she gratefully took her hatchling and flew home with him.
It's like my mother always said, " Friends come in all sizes. Don't be afraid to help others, it will prove to be a blessing for all".
