As we near the end of October many folks in the U.S. are thinking of Hallowe'en. For the U.S., October 31 is a time for scary costumes, horror, gore and wild parties.
Vampires, werewolves, storybook witches and demons appear in the media and on the street, as do ghosts and skeletons. The day is a weird mix of candy and shock value.
For our friends south of the border November 1-3 are the Days of the Dead. It is believed that the dead visit their former homes just to say hello and to hang out with their families. Homes and public places are decorated with flower-trimmed altars holding pictures, mementos, and favorite foods. It is a time to celebrate life by dancing, singing, sharing stories of those who have died, and passing on traditions to those who are still here. Skeletons play a large part in the decorating, but it's in a good natured and fun way, not intended to frighten anybody.
SL has its own Days of the Dead tribute and I've made a point of visiting every year since I started in SL. In fact, the first photograph of my avi to be published online was of me in my Caterina makeup at the (then) Smithsonian tribute. Dia de Muertos 2020 is presented by the Instituto Español. It features a variety of displays, art galleries and events. Visit the sim for more info.
